Crochet Viking Hat- Free Pattern – Off The Hook

Hello readers, this week in Off The Hook i’ve made a crochet viking hat.

I am fascinated by vikings and love reading and watching programs about them, so I was really excited when I was asked to design a viking hat for a friend. Now I am quite aware that real vikings did not actually wear horns on their helmets, but I think the horns look really cool.

I have included two sizes, adults and child. The child hat will fit most children from 5-9 because of the stretchy nature of the crochet viking hat.

Childs Crochet Viking Hat Pattern

Materials

4.5mm hook

Chunky wool

Stitches

Hdc = half double crochet (US terms)

Sc = Single crochet (US terms)

2hdc = 2 half double crochet into same stitch (US terms)

4dc cluster = 4 double crochet cluster. *Yarn over, put hook through stitch yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through first two loops* repeat 3 times. There should now be 5 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all 5 loops. Chain one.

Hat

(1) Ch 4, join into ring. Make 6 hdc into ring. (6)

For all the hdc stitches work into the back two loops of the stitch. Leaving the front loop unworked will create the spiral ridge detail around the hat.

(2) 2hdc in each stitch. (12)

(3) *hdc into next stitch, 2hc into next stitch* 6 times. (18)

(4) *hdc in next 2 stitches , 2hdc in next st* 6 times. (24)

(5)*hdc in next 3 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch* 6 times. (30)

(6) *hdc in next 4 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch * 6 times (36)

(7) *hdc in next 5 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch* 6 times. (42)

(8) *hdc in next 6 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch* 6 times. (48)

(9-10) hdc in each stitch. (48)

(11) *hdc in next 7 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch* 6 times. (54)

(12) hdc in each stitch. (54)

(13) *hdc in next 8 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch* 6 times. (60)

(14)*hdc into next 9 stitches, 2hdc into next stitch* 6 times (66)

(15-24) hdc into each stitch. (66)

(25-26) Sc into each stitch. (66)

(27) sc into next 2 next two stitches*4dc cluster, sc into next 5 stitches* 9 times, 4dc cluster into next stitch, sc into next 3 stitches. (50 sc, 10 4dc clusters)

(28) sc into the next 2 stitches, *sc into top of the 4dc cluster, skip the ch 1, sc into next 5 stitches* repeat 9 times, sc into top of 4dc cluster, skip the ch1, sc into last 3 stitches. (66)

(29) sc into each stitch. (66)

Horn – make 2

(1) Ch 4, join into ring. Make 4 sc into ring. (4)

(2) *Sc next stitch, 2sc into next stitch* 2 times. (6)

(3) *Sc next 2 stitch, 2sc into next stitch* 2 times. (8)

(4) sc in each stitch. (8)

(5) *Sc next 3 stitches, 2sc into next stitch* 2 times. (10)

(6-7) sc in each stitch. (10)

(8) *Sc next 4 stitches, 2sc into next stitch* 2 times. (12)

(9) sc in each stitch. (12)

(10) *Sc next 5 stitches, 2sc into next stitch* 2 times. (14)

(11) sc in each stitch . (14)

(12) *Sc next 6 stitches, 2sc into next stitch* 2 times. (16)

(13-15) Sc in each stitch . (16)

(16) *Sc next 7 stitches, 2sc into next stitch* 2 times. (18)

(17-19) Sc into each stitch. (18)

Stuff horns and sew to hat.

Horn collar – make 2

(1) Chain 22, sc into each chain starting 2nd from hook. (21)

(2) ch 1 (turning chain) sc into each stitch. Sew short ends to make a ring. Slide collars over each horn and sew to the base of each horn.

Adult Crochet Viking Hat Pattern

5.5mm hook

Stuff horns and sew to hat.

Horn collar – make 2

(1) Chain 22, sc into each chain starting 2nd chain from hook. (21)

(2) Ch 1 (turning chain) sc into each stitch. Sew. Short end together to make a ring. Slide collars over each horn and sew to the base of each horn.

This crochet viking hat is surprisingly quick to make and will make a great addition if someone is off to a fancy dress costume, or just to keep their heads warm when they are hording and pillaging.
